Portland Cement Works Wharf, Whangārei
In my sketch, the old wharf sits behind this one. To draw it as well would have created too much 'noise' in the picture, so this is the one featured in the foreground. It's about 1.2 km long.
In the olden days, ships and scows were loaded with coal here, which was destined for the Cement Works. Way back in 1913, my great-grandfather arrived from Wellington and headed to a place in Hikurangi Waho to become the underwriter in a coal mine there.
I bet at some point he had been to that wharf. It had a railway track on it, and I know he also put a rail track into a mine up the Mōkau River, down near Taranaki.
