This scene of the pub and an old scow was drawn in Parua Bay. The pub has its own jetty—I suppose to ensure patrons don't have to drink and drive!

This spot has a personal connection, as a friend owned this pub many moons ago. His boat, Meteor, is the subject of another one of my pieces, 'The Bridge'. The vessel in the foreground is an old scow, likely a replica from an era when a great fleet of them worked these waters. These scows were the workhorses of the coast, and there's a fascinating book about them called The Phantom Fleet. They transported all manner of goods—even horses—out to Great Barrier Island, which lies about 60 km off the Whangarei Entrance.
