Big Orange

NZ$10.00

I have always loved the work of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This piece is inspired by a powerful memory from my childhood in the 1970s.

I remember his boat, the Regentag, moored in Opua. At the time, we were tied up nearby on The Spray, our family's gaff-rigged yawl built in 1910. She was a beautiful classic—pitch pine below the waterline, mahogany topsides, and yellow pine decks, all sheathed in copper.

The Regentag was a formidable presence, a black ship that looked like it belonged to smugglers or pirates. But it was one of Hundertwasser's paintings that truly stunned me. I must have been about eight-years old, and I just remember staring at it, captivated by the intense colours. It was gobsmackingly beautiful.

That memory is the spirit behind "Big Orange." Why is the building orange? Why is the catamaran orange and the knob on top golden?

Because I can. It’s my tribute to the feeling of absolute artistic freedom he inspired in me, all those years ago.
