Cheech and Chong's Bridge

This sketch of the bridge gets its title from the old comedy movie—if you know, you know. Let's just say the local atmosphere can sometimes have a certain... aroma. That, and the noise in the hills behind, was my inspiration for the unique "trees" in this picture.

The bridge itself is a work of art, but it is the personal connections that make it special to me. The woman who operates it, Christine, and I went to school together in Tryphena on Great Barrier Island; our dads were good friends. I have great memories from when we lived on the motor vessel Charmaine, calling Christine to open the other walk bridge for us. Charmaine—a classic from 1940 that once did the mail run in Queen Charlotte Sound—could actually slip under this one without a lift! (See my picture of Charmaine elsewhere on the site).

As for the other characters here, that bird is a Spur-winged Plover, full of attitude as always. And the boat below? That belongs to an old mate who owned the Parua Bay pub—you can find my sketch of the pub, too.

This is a digital artwork that you can print at your local print shop onto canvas or other materials.
