The Signalman on Horseback
The Signalman on Horseback
Upon the sand where shadows creep, I drew him from a history deep. A soldier, young and strong and proud, Standing apart from the main crowd. On horseback, steady, straight, and tall, Awaiting duty's urgent call In Egypt, under skies so vast, A memory from a world long past.
His fingers knew the vital dance Of dot and dash, a warrior's chance. A thread of wire, a spark of light, Sent out into the day and night. A secret message, sharp and clear, For Winston Churchill's ear to hear. A simple key, a hero's hand, Connecting men across the land.
But that great love of horse and might, Didn't vanish with the war's last fight. It didn't end in foreign heat, It found its way to a local street. For in his peace, he'd take you, small, To watch the thundering hooves and calls. Down at the TAB, a knowing smile, To stay and chat with you a while.
From desert mount to betting ring, The joy a winning horse could bring. He was the man who sent the code, And the grandfather who showed You how to pick them, fast and true— A hero, through and through, to you.
