The Catch I Gave Myself
The Catch I Gave Myself
This artwork is a conversation between a photograph and a memory. The source is a black-and-white image from my past: me, at three years old, still in nappies, holding a fishing line on the deck of the yacht 'Iona'. The photograph tells a story of patient hope, but the line is empty.
In recreating this moment, I took the artistic license to rewrite that history. I added the prize my younger self was waiting for—a vibrant gurnard, introducing a shock of color and a sense of triumph to a monochrome memory. The original pattern on my top, a complex and fussy French-curve design typical of the 1960s, was also intentionally simplified. It has been reimagined as a pattern of varied dots, a stylistic choice that honors the retro feel while allowing for a cleaner, more graphic composition. This piece is not just about what was, but what could have been; it is memory, remastered.
